Robber Robber – Suspicious Minds

Vermont quartet Robber Robber close out 2025 with a cover of Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”, reworking the 1969 chart-topper into something entirely their own. The band strips away the original’s Vegas showmanship and replaces it with walls of grungy guitar distortion, cut through by Nina Cates’ delicate vocals. It’s their final release of the year, following last month’s “Talkback”, their first new music since signing to Fire Talk Records.

The cover came out of an Elvis phase where the band spent a few weeks deep in his catalog and watched both recent films about him and Priscilla. They recorded it as a fun project without planning to release it, but the results were too good to keep to themselves. The band notes the irony of the original context, given that Elvis actually gave Priscilla plenty of reasons to be suspicious. “Kinda a gaslight song tbh,” they say, adding that it feels more tongue in cheek now. They give a shoutout to songwriter Mark James, who also wrote “Hooked On A Feeling”.

The track shows another side of Robber Robber’s range after their praised 2024 debut “Wild Guess”, which earned them spots on year-end lists from Pitchfork, Paste and Post-Trash. They’ve been busy touring too, including headline shows and European dates with Julie, as well as releasing “Wild Guest”, an EP of remixes from This is Lorelei, GIFT, Club Casualties, and others.
